4 Beginner Yoga Moves for Burning Calories at Home


So you wanna get in shape for the summer? Who doesn’t, right? Toning up that bod for your the bikini you just dug out of the drawer is on everyone’s mind. Nothing tones the body like yoga. It’s not only refreshing and a way to cleanse the mind of stress, it’s also a fantastic way to burn some calories at home.

We have just what you need to help you get started. Here are four beginner yoga moves that you can easily do from the comfort of your home and will have you summer ready in no time.

1. Kickstand Tap

This move will kick your abs, legs and butt! Starting off in chair pose, stand with your feet together, arms extended overhead and palms facing each other. When you have this all together, sink into a squat.

Staying in the squat position, lift your left foot off the mat, extending your leg behind you to tap the mat. Then return to the start. It’s as simple as that. Doing 20 reps on each side will cause you to feel the burn. Just remember, that burn is your friend, not your enemy!

2. Cha-Cha-Cha

Okay, any pose with this name is already our favorite and it will soon become yours as well. Who doesn’t want rock’n abs? I know I do!! If you’re like me, then this Cha Cha Cha will become your first love and it’s super easy! Starting in a plank position, balance with forearms and toes. Make sure you are keeping your body in a straight line.

After this, you will alternate, bringing your right knee and then your left knee to touch the mat. It’s as simple as that…at least until you start feeling the burn in about 10 seconds but it’s all going to be worth it, right? Do this for 30 seconds to a minute. If you need to work up to a minute, no worries.

3. Running Dog

Dogs are a (wo)man’s best, right? Well if you want to work your abs, arms, butt and hamstrings, this one will become a fast best friend. Start this one in the downward dog position with your palms on the mat and your as well, creating an inverted ‘V’.

Maintaining this position, bring your left knee towards the chest then straight back, extending this leg behind you. Do 10 reps of this with each leg. If you do these reps quickly it will boost your heart rate creating an even better workout. Doesn’t it feel great?

4. Rocking Boat

Lastly, let’s rock that boat! This one is super amazing for working your abs and back! Sit with your knees bent with both feet on the floor in front of you. Lean back to about 45 degrees, raising your feet with toes pointed so that your calves are parallel to the floor.

Extend your arms and legs, keeping your legs together. Your body will be one tight calorie burning machine! Exhale and then on your inhale, lower your torso and legs a few inches and then repeat. Do 10-20 reps of this one. You will thank us later.
