5 Amazingly Scary Discoveries About GMO Foods

To be a smart shopper and nutrition-savvy consumer, you have to pay attention to what’s in your food. Unfortunately, there are more genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, than we know lurking in our food. While it is debatable about the health benefits of these modifications made to our food, there are some shocking discoveries about GMO foods and how they affect us all.

They’re very common

In most developed countries, GMOs have been banned, prohibited, or placed under strict regulations, but the U.S. tends to have less strict regulations than some of its first world counterparts. The food lobbyists fight to keep certain things on the shelf in order to make a profit even though they might not be the best for consumers. In the U.S., GMOs make up about 70-80% of the foods that we eat and that are sold in our supermarkets. That’s a scary statistic!

Weed ’em out

It’s not just the genetically modified seeds that are resistant to weeds; sometimes the weeds are too. How does this happen? Well the weeds growing in the same areas as the crops that are being modified eventually become exposed to GMOs. Over time, the weeds become resistant as well, which causes farmers to use stronger chemicals. More chemicals are the last things we need in our food supply since they affect the safety of the crops that we all consume. When we ingest these artificial substances, it leads to more health problems derived from these GMO foods.

Cover it up

Unfortunately because of the billion dollar food industry and related food lobby groups, there’s a lot we don’t know about GMO foods. Often times, when farmers, independent scientists, and other consumer advocacy groups discover issues with GMOs or attempt to expose the truth about the GMO foods, they have been attacked, threatened, fired, or even denied funding for their research. And sometimes the research never gets published. Ultimately, money is a motivating factor and any information that may reveal the truth about GMO produce is hidden and covered up.

Label mystery

What’s even more scary is that we as consumers might not even know what foods have GMOs and what foods don’t! Despite an increase for the demand of labels with many Americans going to the polls to voice their concern over GMO food labeling, there is still not a legal requirement for food manufacturers to indicate which ones are which. One of the greatest dangers that we can face is not knowing what we’re putting in our mouth. Some foods are labeled with a “Non-GMO” label or sticker, but the fact is, a lot of the foods we consume do not have labels so it is difficult to know what we are actually consuming.

 

Known health risks

While there are known health risks – read about them here – GMO foods still sit on the shelf in the grocery store. Since the introduction of GMO foods, health professionals have seen an increase in chronic illnesses, food allergies, reproductive disorders, and digestive issues. For example, glyphosate—the most common herbicide used on GMO crops—has been shown to have negative effects on the gut bacteria of humans.

So what can we do to keep these foods out of our pantries and off of our dinner tables? Be a smart shopper and look for consumer advocacy groups that put names of GMO food manufacturers on their site. This is one way to know what your buying and what brands to support. When you can, buy organic and always read labels. And of course, vote for legislation that empowers consumers to make healthy decisions for their families.
