GMO ingredients and products pose one of the greatest health risks to our current population. Because of the growing demand for food that tastes better, lasts longer, and looks prettier, Big Food Companies like Monsanto are sending millions of pounds of harmful products to our local grocery shelves every day.
How does someone know what products to avoid and what products to buy? It’s a super difficult task if you’re not educated on how to shop for non-GMO products. That’s why we did the research for you.
This list can help you avoid the GMO products at your local grocery store and potentially save you thousands of dollars in future medical costs and, more importantly, give you a long, healthy life.
Corn and Soybean Ingredients
Research suggests that up to 75% of corn and up to 90% of soybean products available in supermarkets today are GMO. This includes soybean oil, corn oil, high fructose corn syrup (yuck!), and on and on.
These ingredients are in some of our most common foods like cereal, bread, pasta, frozen food, and even processed proteins. We want to encourage you to ALWAYS check the labels on the back of your groceries. If it has any of these ingredients and doesn’t have non GMO verification, then it likely contains GMO ingredients.
Produce That Starts with “8”
Although this is a far-from-perfect way to determine GMO produce, people have found it an effective method for choosing which fruits and veggies are safe that may not be organic. Produce usually comes with a five digit barcode, and readers have found that many GMO fruits and veggies have an “8” as the first number.
It’s better to be safe than sorry when choosing produce, especially when it’s grown and sold by Big Food companies. Therefore, avoid the fruits that start with “8” and, when possible, follow the next point’s suggestions:
The Item Isn’t Certified Organic
The FDA has measures in place to communicate to consumers, which items are grown organically and which are NOT. Being honest, most of us have read articles online that suggest this FDA program is super effective, but it’s always good to err on the side of safety with GMOs. They can be deadly. Buy certified organic WHENEVER possible.
There are certified organic options for almost every type of item you can get at your local grocery store. These items are often 15-20% more expensive than their non-organic counterparts, but when you buy organic you’re investing in your health and your future. That’s why the supplements that are included in the Viance All Natural Weight Loss Program are 100% verified organic.
Why save $.80 on a can of pasta when it could cost you thousands of dollars and life expectancy in the future?
The Item Doesn’t Have a “Non GMO Project” Label
The Non-GMO Project works with over 1,400 companies to provide transparency and accountability about what we’re consuming. We think it’s awesome. Supermarkets like Whole Foods and Sprouts, as well as local farmers markets, will be the best place to find products that have the Non-GMO Project labeling.
This is the #1 safest bet when shopping for non-GMO products because of the intensive approval process companies have to go through the be verified and labeled.
It’s One of the Five “High Risk” Crops
The five crops that have the highest concentration of GMO are: zucchini, yellow summer squash, edamame (soybeans), corn, and Hawaiian papaya. If you need any of these ingredients at home, make sure they are Non-GMO Project labeled; otherwise you’re almost guaranteed to be getting a GMO product.
Shopping for Meal Plans and Recipes
When you’re at the supermarket shopping for your week, consider creating a meal plan and a recipe list. If you have started with Viance on our non-GMO, 100% organic program to lose weight naturally, you can take your pre-organized, easy to read meal plan that outlines all of the ingredients you need to eat extremely healthy for the week.
Just make sure to follow these guidelines and you’ll stay GMO free. 🙂
