Have you ever been so rushed during your workday that you didn’t get a chance to pack a lunch or have the opportunity to choose a healthy lunch option? We have! Instead of taking the time to make the right preparation, we’ve opted to run over to the nearest fast food spot to grab a quick bite.

Fast food chains are notorious for injecting incredible amount of sodium, fat, and carbs into the most harmless looking items. How do you navigate which items are healthy fast food options and which items should be avoided?

We NEVER recommend you visit these fast foods chains if you have an option, because we believe 100% in choosing organic, GMO-free ingredients. However, we’re also aware of the reality that almost everyone will find themselves at a fast food counter at one point or another, and we want to empower you to make the right decisions and choose the best healthy fast food options.

These are five of the most popular fast food restaurants in the United States. If you find yourself in one of these spots and having a hard time choosing the right order, pick these healthy fast food options:

Starbucks

  • Chicken & Hummus Bistro Box (hummus, grilled chicken, grape tomatoes, cucumber, and pita bread) plus a banana; 380 calories, 7g fat (1.2g saturated)

 

Subway

6″ Subway Club on 9-Grain Wheat Bread with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, green peppers, cucumbers, and Sweet Onion Sauce plus apple slices; 445 calories, 4.5g fat (1.5g saturated)

 

McDonald’s

  • Premium Caesar Salad with Grilled Chicken and low-fat balsamic vinaigrette plus Fruit ‘n Yogurt Parfait; 375 calories, 9.5g fat (4g saturated)

 

Taco Bell

  • Fresco Steak Burrito Supreme plus black beans; 430 calories, 10.5g fat (3g saturated)

 

Dunkin’ Donuts

 

  • Egg White Veggie Wake-Up Wrap plus hash browns; 350 calories, 18g fat (4.5g saturated)

Last minute tips:

Skip the sauce.

Although they may look harmless, dipping sauces are loaded with calories and fat, which can seriously destroy your attempt to eat healthy.  The only option we would recommend are ketchup packets, which are usually 10 calories each.

Try the kids menu.

The kids menu is usually available all day and includes smaller portions and healthier side choices. See if any kids options look appealing and help yourself stay in a reasonable calorie count.

Don’t let the salads trick you.

There is a misconception that salads at fast food places are always healthier. False, because some salads have 1000+ calories, which are more than some burgers.
