How to Maintain a Simple Winter Exercise Plan

This is the time of year when we’re all tempted to stay inside and snuggle up with a good book or pop on the Netflix. But don’t let your fitness plan, and your weight loss goals suffer because of the winter weather. Maintain an exercise plan with these few simple tips.

1. Have the right gear

Those cute running shorts and yoga tank aren’t gonna cut it when it’s chilly outside. So invest in some warm leggings, and a cozy sweatshirt or pullover for starters. If you’re gonna brave the snow, get some good earmuffs or a snuggly beanie to cover your ears. And of course, have the right shoes and socks to keep your feet your warm.

2. A home gym

If you’re not brave enough to go outdoors in the testy weather, create a home gym for yourself. Download some exercise podcasts on your computer, or stream them to your smartTV if you’ve got one. Or use instructional DVDs from your local library to change up your routine a bit. And invest in a couple of weights for resistance training, or an exercise ball if you have the room.

3. Get a workout partner

It’s easier to head out into the cold when you know someone is waiting for you on the other end. Whether it’s for a brisk walk, or a relaxing session at the yoga studio, your workout partner is a good motivator for sticking to your schedule in the chilly weather.

4. Warm up

This step is especially critical when the temperatures are low. You definitely want to warm up for about 10 minutes before starting your regular routine. Warming up gets the blood pumping and prevents injury. Try marching in place for a few minutes before you head outside, and do some stretches to get your muscles ready for a good workout.

5. Change your routine

In the winter the days are shorter and it gets darker earlier, so you may need to change your routine. Try going to the gym straight from work so that you don’t get too comfy at home. Bring a gym bag with you to work and don’t forget to pack an extra layer for when you leave. Or sneak in a brisk walk on your lunch hour. Just 30 minutes a day can put you on the right path towards fitness and weight loss through the winter season.

6. Have fun!

So maybe the snowfall derailed your daily run. Well don’t let that stop you from getting at least 30 minutes of exercise in! Get out there and throw some snowballs, build a snowman, or even just shovel it away. Or round up the whole family and go for a fitness-oriented excursion. Try sledding, ice-skating, or for the more daring, snowboarding! Everyone will have fun while getting fit. All of these activities burn calories that sitting inside with a cup of cocoa definitely won’t! Whatever you do, try and maintain your winter exercise plan, but don’t beat yourself up if you miss a day. Get on track the next day and see the pounds drop off!
