With lots of summer potlucks right around the corner, we thought you’d want to have a handy list of some great salads to take along. They’re healthy, tasty, and full of nutritional ingredients – just the kind of dish you want to enjoy all season long to keep your weight loss goals in check!
This is one of our favorite salads because it has a fresh, crisp flavor without any heavy fats. The nutritional star of this salad is basil. Mostly associated with pastas and pesto, basil is a good source of magnesium, which promotes cardiovascular health by helping muscles and blood vessels to relax, thus improving blood flow. And basil also has a good amount of vitamin K, manganese, vitamin C, calcium, iron, folate and omega-3 fatty acids. Wow! Mixed with yummy peppers and one of our favorite superfoods, spinach, it gives this salad some great flavor. If you’re not a fan of shrimp, feel free to substitute some lean pieces of organic chicken instead. Either way, this salad is going to be a crowd pleaser!
Want a salad that doubles as a dessert, too? Well here you go! There’s lots of yummy fruits in this salad, but one of our favorites is a top antioxidant powerhouse: strawberries. Did you know that a half cup of strawberries contains 51.5 mg of vitamin C—about half of your daily requirement? Vitamin C not only boosts our immune systems, but it helps give our skin a radiant glow and anti-aging boost. We like that! This delicious salad also has a healthy dose of Greek yogurt in that creamy dressing, giving you a great source of protein without all of the sugar that’s found in regular yogurt. This salad is also great for a breakfast or brunch dish if you want to make a double batch before the picnic ;).
Want a salad that combines some hearty protein and a good dose of greens? Then look no further than this delicious chicken salad. The green beans in this salad are good for keeping our bones strong and surprisingly enough, they’re also a good source of omega 3s! This is good news for those of us concerned with cardiovascular health. And the romaine lettuce packs in tons of nutrients. Often overlooked because of the more popular greens spinach and kale, romaine lettuce is a very good source of dietary fiber, manganese, potassium, biotin, vitamin B1, copper, iron, and vitamin C. Wow! Enjoy these nutrients in this delicious salad that will have everyone at the picnic coming back for seconds.
One of our favorite sides all year round either at the picnic, or paired alongside a yummy sandwich, is our skinny coleslaw. Cabbage is the main ingredient in this tasty salad and you’ll be happy it is after reading the list of ailments that it helps treat. Everything from constipation to stomach ulcers, headaches to arthritis, and heart disease to skin issues- wow! We spice up this salad with a tasty dressing that includes Greek yogurt, apple cider vinegar, and a little bit of maple syrup. Maple syrup is one of the few natural sweeteners that has nutrients like calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and B6. There’s no doubt you’ll be getting a good dose of vitamins and flavor in this yummy coleslaw!
