Physical Signs Your Nutrition Habits Need to Change

It’s always important to check in with your doctor about health issues, but your body can give you some warning signs that your diet is not up to par and you need to make some changes. There’s definitely some value in paying attention to the physical signs that your nutrition habits need to change, so heed those warnings and start eating right!

hair loss

Are there larger than normal chunks of hair going down the shower drain? Well this is a sign of protein deficiency. Not getting enough, which many vegetarians are prone to, can cause brittle hair or worse, hair loss. Studies show diets that are low in protein, and nutrients like zinc and iron are associated with hair loss and thinning. If your diet is lacking protein, get it from chicken, fish, turkey, pork, nuts, Greek yogurt, or eggs and add some iron-rich foods like pumpkin seeds, beans, or spinach. Try our Greek yogurt recipes to get some more protein in your diet along with some great taste!

If your last trip to the dentist was a cavity disaster, then take another look at your diet. A diet high in added sugar is associated with an increased risk of cavities and sensitive gums. If you are sipping on sugary beverages all day long it means that your teeth are constantly being coated with sugar. Try giving your teeth and your waistline a break by cutting back on the sugar and soft drinks. Our recipe for Strawberry detox water which is tasty and good for your health all at the same time!

hung over

Do you find yourself yawning all the time and just feeling beat and exhausted for no reason? Well you iron levels might be low. Iron is an essential mineral that keeps your energy levels high, while transporting oxygen throughout the body, which is critical to keeping us feeling energized. But when your iron levels are low, your body isn’t able to make enough of the red blood cells that carry oxygen which is why you feel drained. Add foods like red meat, poultry, seafood, beans, dark green leafy vegetables, iron-fortified cereals, and peas to your diet. This tasty recipe for Cranberry Apple Spinach Salad with Sirloin Steak has the green leafy vegetables paired with some delicious, iron-packed steak. Yum!

cant think

Can’t find your keys? Lose your wallet again? If this is you all the time then maybe you need to take a look at what you’re eating. Our brains depend on good nutrition, especially a proper intake of omega 3 fatty acids, to be healthy and function properly. Try including plenty of DHA into your diet by choosing foods high in omega-3s such as walnuts, flax seed, fish oil, and wild salmon to help keep cognitive functioning at its highest. We’ve got plenty of salmon recipes on our blog, including the delicious Grilled Salmon Tacos with Avocado Salsa.

This isn’t the kind of thing we like to broadcast to our coworkers, but if you’re running to the bathroom with diarrhea or constipation issues, it may be a result of inadequate fiber intake. Research shows that soluble fiber slows the absorption of nutrients in the small intestine, while promoting a healthy stool output. Fiber rich foods that are also great for your overall health are beans, oats, citrus fruits, apples, strawberries, pears, avocado, artichokes, and broccoli. This fruit salad recipe is a great breakfast and can get your digestive tract working right to start your day feeling great!
