Superfood Spotlight: Kale Facts and Why You Should Love It + Kale Chip Recipe

Here at Viance we’re always looking for ways to introduce our customers to new ingredients that are healthy and simple. A few years ago, a new green veggie popped up in the health scene, and since then it’s become one of the most popular superfoods around.

You know what we’re talking about: Kale!

Kale has long been considered one of those nasty leafy greens that show up at family potlucks or line the serving trays at salad bars. But did you know that kale is chocked full of vitamins and minerals that are extremely important to your overall health?

For anyone looking to blast into their own Nutrition Revolution, kale is a MUST HAVE for your weekly meals.

One serving of kale has more calcium than milk

What?! Yes, you read that right. Kale is filled with nutritious calcium that fortifies your bones, teeth, and promotes harmony. #GotKale?

Kale has 684% of your daily Vitamin K

What is Vitamin K you ask? Well, let’s get the low down. Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays important role in blood clotting and building strong bones. This means that it can help folks avoid excessive bleeding and issues with blood clotting. Kale to the rescue!

Kale is filled with phytonutrients

We bet your little ones are learning about phytonutrients in class. But did you know that they’re also essential to our overall health? These molecules found in plants like kale reduce inflammation, improve your liver’s ability to detoxify your blood, and reduce stress’ effects on your brain.

Kale is a superfood that cannot be ignored by people looking to lose weight naturally. One kale serving has only 33 calories, yet its one of the most nutrient dense foods in the world.

How the heck to eat kale?!

Raw kale is….a difficult flavor to get used to. However, there are many health nuts and regular moms alike who have found delicious ways to incorporate kale into a diet that is actually delicious. Kale chips are an amazing way to incorporate kale into your diet and they’re the perfect snack replacer of greasy, fatty potato chips. Yuck.

Want a recipe for kale chips? We have you covered!

Baked Kale Chips

1 bunch of kale, torn into bite size pieces (stems removed)
1 tablespoon-ish olive oil
sea salt to taste

Wash and dry the kale (salad spinners are awesome!)
Toss dry kale leaves with oil and salt.
Bake at 275 – 300 degrees for about 20 minutes
Grab the remote and enjoy.

NOTE: The timing of the baking is critical. Baking too little results in limp kale pieces and baking too long causes a “burned” taste. The “curly” kale variety tends to be less bitter. Kale is a nutritional powerhouse and rich in calcium and other vitamins. GREAT way to feed yourself and your kids!! ENJOY!!
