Winter Superfoods and How they Help with Weight Loss

It’s that time of year when we just want to bundle up with comfort food. But don’t let the cold weather stop you from reaching your weight loss goals. Use some of these winter superfoods in your soups, salads, stews, and even desserts to keep the nutrition coming all season long!

1. Parsnips

One of the members of the root vegetable family, sweet and juicy parsnips are a winter superfood because they pack in so many nutrients. They’ve got folate, vitamin C, and dietary fiber – all things our bodies need to stay trim. The fiber will help you feel full and provides sustenance so that you don’t overeat. Try putting some chopped parsnips in your next vegetable soup for some added nutrients.

2. Jicama

This is a versatile root vegetable that can be eaten raw in salads or cooked just like a potato. The soluble fiber in jicama is excellent for helping with weight loss, lowering cholesterol, stabilizing blood sugar levels, and boosts digestive health. This winter superfood also contains vitamin B-6, the vitamin that supports healthy brain functioning, and helps our body to break down protein into usable energy. Wow!

3. Kale

We love kale and use it in plenty of our recipes. While it’s good in salads during the summer months, it’s sometimes sweeter after the frosty months. Whenever you eat it, you’ll be getting loads of nutrients like folate, magnesium, and vitamin C. But it also has fiber and sulfur, both great for detoxifying your body and keeping your liver healthy, which aid in weight loss. Try our recipe for Kale & Quinoa Minestrone to keep you warm!

4. Butternut Squash

This colorful superfood is high in potassium, low in fat, but has a rich, creamy taste when added to your dishes. We like it already! Studies show that the increased fiber in butternut squash have also been shown to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels and enhance weight loss for obese individuals. Our recipe for Roasted Butternut Squash is the perfect addition to any meal!

5. Pears

Have a sweet tooth? Well start adding pears to your winter desserts. They’ve got vitamins B2, C, and E, but their weight loss benefits come from their high concentration of soluble and insoluble fiber, which keeps hunger at bay. So how about making a pear salad as a complement to your next meal?

6. Pomegranate

The pretty superfood pomegranate boasts loads of nutrients and minerals like vitamins K and C. And did you know that a glass of this pretty red juice has more antioxidants than red wine, green tea, blueberries, and cranberries? Wow! Pomegranates also have a high concentrate of nitrates which in studies has led to a delay in the onset of fatigue, and an increase in exercise efficiency. Great for weight loss!

7. Cauliflower

Last but not least, we’ve got superfood cauliflower. Cauliflower is not just an antioxidant powerhouse which helps prevent lots of diseases, but it’s also full of fiber that as we’ve heard before can help with your weight loss goals. We use it in a lot of our recipes, including Garlic Mashed Cauliflower as a tasty side dish or Cauliflower Breadsticks if you want a healthy snack!

So get your shopping list ready and head to the farmer’s market for some of these winter superfoods to keep you on track with your weight loss goals!
